General Joel Leftwich was born in 1760 in Bedford County, VA. He married Nancy Turner in 1781. He joined the American Army at the age of seventeen and was active in the Revolutionary War. After his service in the War of 1812, he was promoted to Major General, a position he held until he retired. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature for the session of 1792-3. He was a Justice of the Peace and a Sheriff for Bedford County for many years. He left only one child, a son, when he died in 1846.
